CHS and Birchwood Elementary to Stage Original Work

Here is the press release from CHS Drama Club Sponsor Sally White:

For Immediate Release: I Was Told There Would Be Pickles: An Original Play by Students from CHS and Birchwood Elementary School

The Central High School Drama Club is proud to announce the upcoming production of the original play, I Was Told There Would Be Pickles, to be presented at 2:00 P.M. Monday, May 7th, at Birchwood Elementary School. The production is the culmination of a collaborative project by CHS Drama Club students and students from Birchwood Elementary School’s fourth and fifth grade classes.

Birchwood students completed their part of the project in the fall, writing original stories and sketching characters, which served as the inspiration for the play’s script. The CHS Drama Club then crafted the children’s wildly creative stories and colorful characters into a play, which revolves around a quest for a golden pickle that must be secured in order to restore peace to the Pickle Kingdom.

The project, which has been a real labor of love on the part of all involved, has required a great deal of time and energy by multi-talented students who have built scenery and sewn costumes when they weren’t needed on stage. The result of their considerable effort is a hilarious, wild romp through the Pickle Kingdom. The young heroes encounter zombies, giant spiders, and man-eating carpets as they attempt to secure the golden pickle and bring peace to the residents of an imagined (or is it real?) world.

Tia Strickland, a senior at Central High School, directed the play for her Senior Project.  “It has definitely been one of the harder Senior Projects,” said Miss Strickland, when asked about her critical work on the production, “but also one of the most fun. Seeing a child’s imagination come to life on stage – just being a part of that – has been great.”

The CHS Drama Club is thrilled about the opportunity to present this magical play for the students who originally inspired it. Community members are invited to attend the production at 2:00 PM, Monday, May 7th, at Birchwood Elementary School.
