Torah covers in the exhibit.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga is hosting an exhibit at the Jewish Cultural Center.  Torah Covers:Sacred Textiles will include historic and contemporary Torah Covers from artists and synagogues across the country.  There are examples of High Holiday covers as well as colorful Torah covers used throughout the year.  The public is invited to attend a free reception on Thursday, December 15th at 5:30 at the Jewish Cultural Center to view and discuss the Torah Covers.  The exhibition will be on display at the Jewish Cultural Center through mid January.  The Jewish Cultural Center is located at 5461 North Terrace Road in Chattanooga.

Women of Letters

The Jewish Cultural Center presents two evenings with two literary women on Chattanooga.  Monday December 5th will feature Ruth Holmberg, publisher emeritus of The Chattanooga Times in an evening event Ruth and Chocolate.  The Jewish Federation’s Communication Director Rachel Schulson will interview Ruth Holmberg about her life in publishing and her personal memories.  Dark chocolate is Ruth’s favorite food so expect plenty of chocolate on the menu.

On Thursday December 8th Alison Lebovitz will read from her book Am I There Yet?  This event will provide an opportunity to meet the author as well a purchase signed copies of her book.

Juvenile Court Judge is Launch Guest

Launch, is a program geared to individuals interested in discussing local issues with an informed guest discussion leader. August’s program will begin on Thursday, August 12  at noon.

The guest for Launch in August will be Juvenile Court Judge Suzanne Bailey.   Judge Bailey will discuss the current climate and circumstances of juvenile court and entertain questions.  Bailey is quoted in an interview as saying, “We’re having not only the children not understand they have to take responsibility when the commit these offenses, but we have a difficult time today, more so than we did ten years ago, with the parents.”  She recognizes that youth violence happens in all communities and effects families regardless of income, social level or race.  Judge Bailey’s rulings take into account many factors. Come to Launch to learn more about the juvenile court system.

Bailey has served as the Presiding Judge of the Hamilton County Juvenile Court for the past 20 years, in addition to 7 years prior service as Judicial Referee for the Court. She was  in the private practice before appointment and then election to the bench.  She received her B.A. from Vanderbilt University and her J.D. from UT College of Law. She is a recipient of the McCann-Abernathy Award for Outstanding Juvenile Court Judge in Tennessee, past president of the Tennessee Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, a current member of Judicial Ethics Committee appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court, former Commissioner of the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth, and a former member of the Tennessee Supreme Court Permanency Planning Commission, in addition to serving on advisory boards for community groups addressing children and family issues. She is also a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation.

The Jewish Cultural Center is under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga. Located at 5461 North Terrace, the Center and its programs are open to everyone regardless of religious affiliation.
