Dr. Cothran presents, “The ‘F’ word and the ‘B’ word: Feminists, Feminist Orientation and the Use of Sexual Epithets” lecture as part of the Women’s Studies Lecture Series on the UTC campus on March 22nd at 5:30p.m.. Cothran has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis and she currently teaches the Psychology of Women as part of the Women’s Studies program at UTC. “The term feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing equal rights and legal protection for women,” according to wikipedia but the word has become ensnarled in recent times even though by definition it is positive, she explains. The lecture arose from an in-class demonstration with students who found that the ‘B’ word can be either negative or positive depending on whose saying it to whom but when used to describe a man, the word is never positive.
