Saving the Red Wolf

Reporting:  Rabbit Zielke

Red Wolves are one of the most endangered animals on the planet.  An active breeding program is working to help restore this species.  The Chattanooga Nature Center hopes to successfully breed 2 pairs of red wolves this breeding season as part of the Red Wolf Species Survival Plan.

Over the past several years the Chattanooga Nature Center has been 1 of 40 zoos and nature centers participating in the captive breeding program for the Red Wolf.  The Nature Center provides safe enclosures for the wolves and offers visitors the opportunity to view these beautiful animals in their habitats as well as web cameras that focus on the puppies.  Last year the puppies provided hours and hours of entertaining viewing.  This year with 2 breeding pairs in the mix we can expect litters around April or May.

Thank you for this story. The more people who know about projects like this one, the better for the animals and the environment.
